"𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐩𝐮𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐧?"

"𝐈 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮'𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐥𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐭? 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐩𝐮𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐧?"

I often get asked this question, and though my answer may vary depending on the context, considerations, conditions, consequences, and circumstance, most of the time, my answer revolves around this thinking:

𝘐'𝘷𝘦 𝘢𝘭𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘺 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘧𝘢𝘳, 𝘸𝘩𝘺 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘨𝘰 𝘢 𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘦 𝘧𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳, 𝘪𝘧 𝘐 𝘤𝘢𝘯?

This is particularly so in the context of the Singapore Management University Pegasus Overseas Grant which I'm fundraising for.

The target was $50,000. With $50,000, the endowment grant will be able to generate $2,666 each year, every year, to enable one financially challenged SMU student to benefit from an overseas exchange programme in the region.

Thanks to so many big-hearted family, friends and associates, we've reached $50,000 on 27 January 2025, 10 days from the launch.

But I soon learnt that with $56,250, the endowment grant will be able to generate $3,000 each year, every year. The additional $6,250 will give a student beneficiary $334 more each year.

So about a month after we've reached the target, I'm making one more appeal. We are at $53,088 at the time of posting this. That's $3,162 more to go.

If we can go a little farther, why not?

Curious about the pencil sketch of the pegasus? I drew it as part of my prep work for an oil painting I made in 1995 as a gift to the Britannia Royal Naval College. I thought a photo of an actual drawing by me would be more sincere in my fundraising appeal than an AI-generated image! 😅

SMU Alumni Giving

The fundraising campaign has now closed. Thanks to all donors, we've raised $56,250, surpassing the $50,000 target.

With this amount, the University will be able to disburse $3,000 to support the overseas exchange programme of one financially challenged SMU student each year, every year, in perpetuity.
